Guitar Hero On Tour for DS: odd and awesome

The Guitar Hero on Tour website goes live tomorrow: guitarheroontour.com

A video surfaced today which shows just how Guitar Hero on Tour, the DS iteration of the rock game phenomenon, will be played. Wired has a good write-up on it along with a video embedded from IGN.

The video shows what I can only describe as and odd and yet awesome control scheme for the game. Having Guitar Hero on the DS is indeed a very ambitious undertaking, but this video looks like it may actually work. Not only that, it looks like it will work well. By utilizing an attachment that has the coloured fret buttons on one side, players can hold the ds with one hand while strumming the touchscreen with what looks to be an included pick with the other. Brilliant!

The official site for the game is set to launch tomorrow. Here’s to the day that I’ll be able to annoy not just neighbours, but fellow commuters with the clickity clacking of my rockin’ out.

My money’s on this being more odd than awesome. Picking the touchscreen isn’t really conducive to the “rockin’ out” that makes the rest of the series fun.

I will admit that anyone seen playing this in public is going to look mighty dorky. But for someone like me, who already looks like a big dork (albeit a super cool one, if I do say so myself) it isn’t really a problem.

Also, I couldn’t care less what bankers on the train think of me, so I’ll be rockin’ out while they’re checking their Blackberries for super important news. We’ll all look stupid and awesome in our own ways.

  4. If by awesome you mean idiotic, then I agree. Again, this is just my humble opinion, but I can forsee much DS breakage because of this game interface.

Kirk is on the money. Some things REALLY require a tactile response so that you feel at least somewhat invested (physically) in the game. Just the “finger board” doesn’t cut it. I needs me some strumz!

Jorge, have you played Jam Sessions DS? It’s surprisingly good in terms of controls.
