GameNow Now Gone

By Shaun Hatton - July 1st, 2008

GameNow Now Gone!

Independent video games store GameNow has closed its doors, evidently for the last time, causing many loyal customers to lament the fact that they have one less great place to hang out and buy games.

I had first visited GameNow over two years ago, back when I was madly searching for classic games for the NES and Sega Master System. GameNow had a lot of what I was looking for the few times I visited it. I would even recommend the store to friends looking for an alternative to EB, Blockbuster, and others of their ilk. It was truly an awesome experience being in there with the amount of inventory they had and the expertise of the staff.

Sadly, GameNow was too far away for me to visit on a regular basis. While details haven’t yet emerged on why the store suddenly closed, there is speculation that the owner was tired of the retail video game business.

On that note, if you know of any great independent game stores, for the love of all that is good, please support them. Two of the best stores I’ve been to recently are 1-Up Games in Hamilton (the store has two locations) and We Got Games in Shopper’s World, Brampton.

    Too bad. Game Now was literally 5 minutes from my house, but I didn’t go there very often.

    That’s sad, it’s kind of how I felt when Deja Vu Discs stores started to close.

    man that sucks! The dudes there were always so nice. I hope my $2 late fee that I never paid didn’t push them over the edge.

    well lets see there’s A and C Games http://www.acgamesonline.com/ there’s Gamerama about a block north of younge and eglinton pretty much below an EB Games. and out in the durham region there’s a place in oshawa called G.A.M.E.S, it used to be a microplay, but a friend of a friend owns it and my buddy used to work there. It has a decent selection of most current gen consoles, but also alot of old skool stuff too…NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. It’s at 1100 Simcoe St N.

  6. Wow, this is kind of a shocker. I work literally 2 minutes away from GameNow and it was somewhere I liked to visit on those tough afternoons on which I needed to escape the office.

    I’m a sad panda.

    I definitely felt sad when I went passed Gamenow tonight on my way to pick up a Hot and Ready from Little Caesars and realized that the store had been basically abandoned. I got to know the owner, Dan, pretty well. He was an extremely nice guy, and so were all the other employees that worked there.

    There was actually a notice on the door that I couldn’t really make heads or tails of, but what jumped out was the 11 thousand dollars and change that seemed to be owed in I guess rent fees. o.o;

    So ya, that really sucks. =/ What’s even worse is I had $30 on my account. Ironically, my mom told me not to sell my games to them because they’d probably go under. Oh well, you live and you learn. x_x;

    Anyways, thanks for a couple great years, Dan and everyone else that made GameNow possible. You’ll really be missed.

    Yeah - This was a shocker for me. Dan, the co-owner was a hell of a nice guy.
