BEST YEAR EVER
2008 Brought Us Excellent Titles

By Toronto Thumbs Staff - January 4th, 2009

Best of 2008

Now that we’re in the New Year, the Toronto Thumbs staff has been thinking about their favourite games of the year. Here we haven’t chosen a set amount of titles to list off, nor have we decided to crown one single title as “Game of the Year.” After all, that would be tremendously unfair to all the other great games that were released in 2008.

Kicking against the grain, as per usual, is Jorge. His initial list included quite a few games that were released prior to 2008 but that he enjoyed thoroughly throughout the year. After we had given him a little bit of trouble about it, he eased up slightly though one 2007 title still crept onto his list. What can we say? He’s a stubborn guy who can beat the rest of us up with both his hands tied behind his back – and that’s nothing compared to his prowess in fighting games.

Some of the staff members were busy with holiday duties (see also: sleeping) and have therefore not contributed to this article. Expect them to chime in at a later date.

I was never really a huge fan of the original game. But man, hearing you guys rave about it is REALLY getting me curious.

    Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
OMG. I can’t believe I didn’t put this on my list (I blame too many great games). Whether you are a fan of the show or not, this title rocks all kinds.

How different is this than the Flash game?

    Naruto: The Broken Bond
“Some show for kids indeed”. This is the closed-mindedness that I laugh at. People who say that have never watched this show, which is one of the best-written series that I’ve ever seen. Seriously. That’s not even me speaking as a rabid fan.

I’m surprised the MSG4 wasn’t mentioned at all.

As an adult gamer with limited time, the games were so many that I still have a “to do” list of games from 2008. And 2009 is just going to add to that list with Killzone 2, Resident Evil and others.

Sequels, new innovative tiles, retro and download games…there hasn’t been a year with such a broad spectrum of options.

Here’s hoping that the parade of good titles never lets up so gamers will always have a choice for the next game to play.

I’m not too surprised MGS4 wasn’t included, but only because I don’t think Jamie has played it yet.

Haha oh no Shaun I’m going to get railed for that one!!!

@Chrissy – Yes Jamie told me that he hasn’t gotten to MGS4 because of you!

@Shaun – Hahaha well I’ve since told him he doesn’t have to wait, I’ll catch up later. But now he insists on waiting and holding it against me :)

But even without playing it I still think it would make his top of 2008!

JORGE ===> I’ve never played the Flash version of N, and indeed, when I did a Google search for it to try it out, linky no work.
I can attest to the DS version, though, which is well done and pretty addictive. Provided it doesn’t crash between saving spots (*sigh*), it’s a good time. Given the price of movies these days (against which I tend to compare other entertainment costs), I’m already well past getting my $20 out of the purchase.
