Space Invaders Extreme

Space Invaders Extreme

Space Invaders Extreme is as good a remake as one can hope for. Like Pac-Man Championship Edition, this remake has a pumping techno backbeat with brightly coloured sprites as enemies and power-ups. The action is all superimposed over a stylized video background, and each stage has its own video effects.

Like the original, players control a lone gunship defending Earth from an oncoming alien horde. Rows and columns of Invaders shuffle from left to right. When they reach the end of the screen, they drop down one row. Should an Invader reach all the way to the bottom of the screen, the player loses a life.

The “Extreme” portion of the game kicks in via its sharply increasing difficulty, which speed is partly to blame for. Enemies attack in various patterns. Shooting down four enemies of the same colour consecutively will make the fourth enemy drop a power-up, from laser upgrades to shields which bounce enemy shots back at them. With newfound firepower, more strings of enemies can be taken down and they, in turn, drop more power-ups. Because power-ups are time-limited, it’s therefore important to keep on firing at similarly coloured enemies to keep the power-ups coming.

Each stage of the game has bonus stages, accessible by successfully downing special enemies. These bonus stages offer a break from the main action while introducing even more hectic game-play. For instance, players might have to shoot down 16 UFO-type enemies within the allotted time.

Meeting the challenges in bonus stages triggers “Fever Time” and kicks players back into main game. Fever Time gives the player stronger laser firepower for a limited time. In addition to the bonus stages, certain UFO enemies will trigger a roulette mini game where players can win power-ups or extra lives.

Each round also has a boss enemy, which can either be one big baddie or be a formation of similarly difficult enemies to overcome. Some of them can be downright nasty, and getting a game over during a boss fight will result in being dropped back at the start of the level. There’s no shortage of challenge in this tiny cart, and if you conquer the “story” mode, you can always take the fight online to face off against player around the world.

For fans of classic arcade shoot-em-ups, Space Invaders Extreme is a must-have.

    This is one of those games that I look at every time I go into the store and almost buy.

    I’d be interested in picking up the PSP version opposed to the DS. I figure it’s the same game but the way you use the controls differs, because obviously the PSP doesn’t have a touch screen. For me personally I just find the PSP more comfortable for some games and I think this would be one of those situations. Although I still have the first generation of DS so that might have something to do with it.

  3. I can vouch for the PSP version of the game as I picked it up some time ago. I enjoy it quite a bit, it’s usually my go to game when I don’t have a lot of time to game and want some bang for my buck.

    A lone gun-ship? Rows and columns of Invaders that shuffle from left to right?

    That’s not what happens in my copy… what on earth are you playing?

    I have no idea. Maybe I shouldn’t write when on cold meds. Guys, I’m taking some sick days.

    I want to get through N+ before I crack this - which I bought on Shatton’s recommendation a few weeks back - but this only makes me look forward to it even more.

  7. Am I right that this is one of the games that supports the paddle controller? Did you have a chance to try it with the game?

    @Chris
    I hadn’t really heard of the paddle controller until you mentioned it (and now I feel out of the loop!) and it’s really neat.

    But then it got me thinking with the new DSi coming out soon, what will happen to all of these additions they’ve made that require the GBA slot. I don’t know it just seems odd that they weren’t thinking ahead at all.

    Hey Chris, this game definitely makes use of the sadly rare paddle controller. Taito should release it stateside, but I doubt that will happen.

    I’m under the impression that you could use the paddle that came stateside with Arkanoid

    I’m under the impression that paddle never came to North America. It’s now time for us to fight.

    @Shaun

    short fight, it never did it seems. Best you can do is import one I guess.
