Meet Explodemon!

By Jamie Love - April 3rd, 2009

Explodemon!

While no two press releases are created equal, most fall into three easy categories. Aside from feeding information about upcoming or current releases, there’s the straight facts, the attempts at humour, and the occasion boastful line. This is genuinely what I expect when checking the mail each morning. But Curve Studios managed to surprise me with the rather unique way Design Director Jonathan Biddle described their current project:

Explodemon! is best described as what Treasure would create if they mixed Yoshi’s Island with Half Life 2. It includes many elements from games as diverse as Street Fighter II, Halo, Super Metroid and Bangai-O.”

My brain misfired a few times trying to imagine what that might look like.

What we know so far is that Explodemon! is a 2.5D platformer being developed for PSN, WiiWare and PC for release in late 2009. The game’s combustible hero has the ability to continually explode, which allows him to leap through the air, destroy enemies, and apparently solve puzzles. The game is also said to be heavily influenced by Japanese games from the SNES era, with poor translations included.

Whether Explodemon! manages to squeeze elements from all of the titles mentioned into the game-play and still function, or merely wanted to grab our attention remains to be seen - but we’ll be keeping an eye on it. In the meantime you can check out some brief footage of the game courtesy of YouTube.

Great character design - reminds me of a cross between Transformer and Mega Man villain.
