New PlayStation 3 Model Introduced, Price Cut To Existing Models

Prior to E3, one of the big Sony-related rumours was whether or not the company would announce the next iteration of the PlayStation 3, namely the PS3 “Slim.” Today Sony finally did announce it, and although the official name doesn’t appear to have the word “slim” in it, the unit itself does fit the description when compared to its bulkier counterpart.

According to a press release issued by Sony Computer Entertainment Canada, the new PlayStation 3 will have a matte charcoal black finish, a 120GB hard drive, and have a price tag of $299 CDN when it’s released September 1, 2009. This brings the PS3 to a highly competitive price point when compared to both the Xbox 360 60GB Pro Console and the Wii.

In addition to this, the price of the existing 80GB PS3 has also been cut to $299 CDN as of today while the 160GB unit has been reduced to $399 CDN. At this point, however, it looks like a few retailers are sticking to the old prices. But I expect them to fall in line within a week.

Perhaps the best thing about the redesign is the fact that the goofy Spider-Man movie font is gone, replaced instead with a somewhat subtle embossed PS3 logo. More importantly, however, is that the new price range will give more people the chance to experience the system’s exclusive titles.

I’m not sure how I feel about the look. It’s kind of odd to me… Something about it just feels like HK ripoff.

At the same time, I don’t think it looks BAD. My problems with the PS3 never involved size or look, honestly.

That said, the price is welcome. I knew I’d get a PS3 eventually and this makes it a lot easier to do. It’s harder to ignore some of the exclusives on it from Atlus and others.
