Dead to Rights is a “Gun-Fu” franchise involving a good guy surrounded by corruption who kicks that corruption’s ass fairly hard. Dead To Rights: Retribution marks the first time a game in the series will hit the current-generation consoles.
The game places you in the shoes of Jack Slate, Grant City police officer, and details the origins of his relationship with his faithful dog, Shadow.
The build I played was still in its Beta phase, but was nonetheless very impressive. The combat system is simple, yet effective, allowing to switch back and forth between melee and ranged combat. Currently some of the fancy options (like grenade targeting arcs) have yet to be implemented (it’s also possible they weren’t enabled on the demo I played).
One of big the draws of Dead To Rights: Retribution is the sidekick, Shadow. You can use him in battle to confound enemies, getting him to run up to them and start chewing on their arms. It’s a great way to have an enemy dragged out from behind cover so you can shoot him. Or, perhaps you can just let Shadow finish him off.
According to the demonstrator I spoke with, there will be some levels that you will play as Shadow, unveiling cool, augmented sensory abilities.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the development of this game pans out. It so far appears to have a compelling story and excellent play mechanics.
Dead To Rights: Retribution is slated for a Q1 2010 release in North America.
