The Videogame History Timeline

Designer and programmer Mauricio Giraldo Arteaga has created an awesome interactive timeline detailing the history of this medium we love so much: Videogames. The history goes back to December 27, 1791 when Charles Babbage, English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer came up with the concept of a programmable computer. I totally did not know that before.

Of course, things really pick up in the 70s and carry onward to present day. What’s really cool about this is its fluid design that allows would-be time travelers to effortlessly hop from date to date. Is this how Marty McFly must have felt like, minus the constant anxiety?

I was expecting the site to be cooler than it was. Interesting concept, boring execution.

It could be that the lack of flashiness is to keep CPU usage somewhat in check - there is a lot of data to go through. I agree though, some extra zazz would liven it up. As it’s still designated as being beta, maybe there’s more to come?

    Hi

Thanks for the link+comments. The purpose of the project is to give you a “bird’s-eye view” of events relevant to the history of videogames and the relation between them. Eye-candy/coolness is not a goal (although I think it is cool… “coolness” is a matter of personal point of view). However, I really want to have alternative ways of exploring that data (getting the timeline to the point where it is right now has been some task by itself) and any input is appreciated. I will be working on it.

That’s great to hear, mga! It’s certainly a large undertaking and you’ve done a great job of organizing it all. I know I’ll be spending much more time browsing the timeline in the near future.

I miss Zork, and Karateka, and the 3d Zork they came out with in the mid 90s! not sure if I finished that one but i still remember the rambling Hill Billy guide and the puzzle where you had to burn a bra to get the wire. Wow, weird selective memory i have there.

Cool stuff here. A little slow to load but I guess more sites are picking up on this.
