OMG
Christmas Every Time

Growing up with technology gains one a reputation; labeled as ‘nerds’ and ‘geeks’, we trudge on, keeping up with technology with almost mythic levels of dogged determination. We shrug the name-calling aside; orn as is more often the case these days, we accept these labels, opting to wear them as badges of honour.
Some of you know what I’m talking about; you know that feeling of excitement when you are on your way to Toys ‘R Us to pick up that Masters of the Universe cartridge for your Intellivision; loading the latest Epyx game is almost a ritual, with the beat of tribal drums reaching a thrumming crescendo with the typing of “run” after “,8,1″; or perhaps it is the unwrapping of a Nintendo 64?
I am not of childhood or teen age – I am an adult; however, those who know me would acknowledge the simple fact that I am an amalgam of adult and kid; someone who acknowledges their civic responsibility and parental duty, yet still makes sure to play. I am also lucky to have a great group of close friends (who will remain anonymous, unless they wish to out themselves), who enjoy gaming every bit as much as I do.

I was speaking the other day with one of these chums of mine, as to how incredible it is that the two of us are still very much enamoured with Team Fortress 2, even though it has been out for 3 years now. Part of this is thanks to Valve’s constant improvements to the game, including new content and hilarity; but part of it is also a deep-seated love for the game itself: something has obviously struck a chord.
It made me wonder what other games I really enjoy and look forward to; what games make me feel like a kid when I find out any news about them whatsoever; of course this leads to a partial list…
- Anything related to trains
- Anything involving swinging a light saber
- Pretty much anything with Lord of the Rings in the title
- All things Assassin’s Creed
- Naruto
- Patapon anything
- Team Fortress 2 item announcements
I don’t normally do this sort of thing on the main blog (the forums are good for this kind of thing); but I’m really wondering what turns our readers’ cranks, and what sort of thing they are looking forward to in the upcoming war of the controllers; and I want to reach beyond the forums, which some people are afraid to explore (you really should get in there, it’s hella fun).
So? Talk to me, goose! What games make you feel like a kid on Christmas morning?

Anything Mario or Diablo (or Torchlight) related for me…
Oh man, that N64 photo is a near replica of a certain Christmas in my past. Good times.
What gets me all excited nowadays? Anything TF2, for sure, not to mention the Blizzard double-whammy of StarCraft II and Diablo III. Basically, any title that tickle my retro bone gets my ears up (the horrendous X-COM reboot notwithstanding).
@Jackson – Torchlight? Really? I never would have guessed.
@Rituro – I’m surprised you didn’t put anything in there about those slimy greenskins.
Mario games and Mega Man games, for sure. Also Shinobi and Thunder Blade, since I got those for Christmas years ago.
@Jorge: There’s a difference between “kid on Christmas” happy and “nob about to cleave some humie in half” happy. One involves WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!, the other involves OMIGAWWWWWWWWWWWWWD!.
