The other night, I had the privilege and pleasure of attending Nintendo’s preview launch of Metroid: Other M. Being as much a fan as anyone of the original NES platformer, I was pretty excited when they told us that this new episode would be a direct continuation of Super Metroid from SNES, including characters like Mother Brain, and of course, Ridley. I was even a bit relieved as I had dropped off a bit from the series when the Prime franchise was released on the Gamecube & the Wii.

Our Nintendo guide told us, “Miyamoto-san, (high ranking Nintendo deity, creator of Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Starfox; producer of Metroid Prime, and more…) really wanted to preserve the original game play of the series, ”; he certainly did. The game makes no use of the nunchuck, sticking to just the 4 button Wiimote. One button for jumping, one for shooting, and one for targeting and launching rockets while in first person mode.

About that First Person mode. You can’t actually move around, your position stays fixed in place. It’s really just for targeting and launching rockets. A bit disappointing, but again, this game is about returning back to basics and there is no need to overcomplicate things. The immersive side-scrolling environment offers plenty of fun and classic Nintendo style interaction that gamers like myself
have been craving for oh-so-many years.

    … what? Who’s this Matsumoto fellow? IIRC there wasn’t just one creator–I hate to quote Wikipedia but here’s what I dug up from the Metroid article:

    “The central figures in the production and development of the Metroid series are Yoshio Sakamoto who has directed or supervised the development of all the games (excluding Metroid II), Gunpei Yokoi who headed the Research & Development 1 team and produced the first three games before his death in 1997, Makoto Kano who directed and designed scenarios for the first three games, and Hiroji Kiyotake who designed the characters for the original game.”

    The source presented is IGN, though I dunno about a source behind that one …

    That being said, your prize is on it’s way.

    And by “prize” I mean “gratitude”.

    And by “on it’s way” I mean “Matsumoto”.

    What’s with the Metriod Prime hating from so many people? It’s a great game, great trilogy, and got outstanding reviews, and not just from me.

    Is it because it’s a first-person shooter, because it included too much exploration, because it took the franchise in such a new direction or are people just afraid of change? I don’t get it!

  6. I don’t know why people don’t like Prime either. I mean, it was a lot of fun, and was my introduction into the Metroid franchise.

    Also it has the word Prime in it, like Optimus Prime. What’s not to like?
