The Fisher Price Apptivity Case

As humanity marches on, our technology grows increasingly advanced. I know that from personal experience it is hard to keep kids away from shiny gadgets; especially the iPod. Each version of the iPod Touch has a better display than the last version, making it an attractive target for young kids – especially babies – given the brightness and clarity of the images on the screen. So what’s a techie parent to do? Fisher Price has come up with an answer in the form of the Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case.

In true dueling-banjoes-type fashion, I am posting my lesser reviews for two iOS games just after Jayson posted his. That’s not to say that the games I reviewed are inferior to Mr. Young’s; on the contrary, the games are great! The first game is a spin on an old favourite; the second will have you spinning your iPod.

Chillingo —The Premier Games Publisher— recently bestowed me generously with copies of two of their newer releases, Race illegal and Gum Drop! For those of you reading this who are aware of the irony inherent in spending time reading about iOS games (for real, it will probably take you longer to read what I—or anybody?—has to say about these games than it will for you to download and try them yourself), let me cut to the chase: these two games are totally different from one another, but both pretty neat! If this were me doing an iTunes review, I’d say Race illegal High Speed 3D is a **** and Gum Drop! is a **1/2 or maybe ***. Now I will engage in the tricky business of trying to explain why.

There are a steady stream of iOS apps that hit the App Store every day. Here are three that I have checked out recently that I would like to briefly touch upon. The first is really an update to an existing title; the second is an aquatic fighting game; and the third is a title that looks like a mix of old and new.

Here are four apps for iOS that might tickle your fancy. The first is a game the uses the motion-detecting capabilities of the iPod Touch. The second is an app that allows you to create unique music videos. The last two are old-school vertical scrolling shooters that are a lot of fun.

Galaxy Express

In a landscape as vast as the App Store, it is fairly easy to get lost trying to find a good puzzle game. This is not because of some sort of shortage of mind-twisting goodness. On the contrary; the problem is choosing from the near-overwhelming number of puzzle apps. In my opinion, Arctic Empire’s Galaxy Express stands just slightly above its peers, making it a good use of your personal processing cycles.

Zorro looks a bit like Ezio in this picture.

Up for perusal today are two iOS titles that are quite different from one another with the exception of one word: “awesome” (well, I suppose “adventure” would also be another common word). The first game is about one of the original masked men in black while the other is a classic WWII-shooter/flight sim that is enjoying a comeback.

Mini Cafe, an iOS game from SGN (bought by MindJolt earlier this year), presents you with the challenge of running a restaurant. If you are the ambitious sort, you can try and expand your humble eatery into something a little more grand. This iOS-based restaurant sim is as fun as it is addictive.
