Hero Academy

I have always wanted to play a game of chess through the mail or with a very distant friend; where each person has a board set up in their home and then when you receive a letter with coordinates and you would move the pieces accordingly. That’s the ultimate in class, I think: a game of wits with a complete stranger over an extended period of time. That is why when I was told about Hero Academy, developed by Robot Entertainment* for iOS, I jumped at the opportunity to try it out.

2012 is upon us! The Holiday season has been good to everyone – I’m sure that quite a number of gift cards exchanged hands, leaving our intrepid readers with some cash to spare. Here are some humble suggestions on what that i-money might be used for. We have three brief summaries: an RTS (of sorts), an educational interactive piece about soccer, and an art application.

Night of the Living Dead Defense

Distracting games that borrow a movie’s likeness are a tricky lot. They are designed to provide players with a quick gaming session that still keeps the original source material’s charm while not turning into a rehash or retelling of the film’s story. This brings me to discuss a certain Night of the Living Dead themed tower defense game called Night of the Living Dead Defense – now available for iOS and Android devices from SGN.

Each version of the iPod Touch has a better display than the last version, making it an attractive target for young kids – especially babies – given the brightness and clarity of the images on the screen. So what’s a techie parent to do? Fisher Price has come up with an answer in the form of the Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case.

In true dueling-banjoes-type fashion, I am posting my lesser reviews for two iOS games just after Jayson posted his. That’s not to say that the games I reviewed are inferior to Mr. Young’s; on the contrary, the games are great! The first game is a spin on an old favourite; the second will have you spinning your iPod.

Worth iTrying – iOS Titles You Might Like

Chillingo —The Premier Games Publisher— recently bestowed me generously with copies of two of their newer releases, Race illegal and Gum Drop! For those of you reading this who are aware of the irony inherent in spending time reading about iOS games (for real, it will probably take you longer to read what I—or anybody?—has to say about these games than it will for you to download and try them yourself), let me cut to the chase: these two games are totally different from one another, but both pretty neat! If this were me doing an iTunes review, I’d say Race illegal High Speed 3D is a **** and Gum Drop! is a **1/2 or maybe ***. Now I will engage in the tricky business of trying to explain why.
