This Is Me Playing Rock Band

By Shaun Hatton - October 27th, 2009

This Is Me Playing Rock Band

On Saturday I went to a friend’s housewarming party and played Rock Band in public for the first time in, well, a few weeks. Only this time I didn’t look quite so ridiculous. This is me rocking out to “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which is a song that needs no rocking out, to tell the truth.

MADE OF WIN
Alien Abduction Lamp

By Shaun Hatton - October 23rd, 2009

Alien Abduction Lamp

I came across this Alien Abduction Lamp during my Internet travels this week. I’m not sure where I originally found it as many sites have now posted about it, but I wanted to make sure I mentioned it here because although I’m deathly afraid of UFOs and aliens I am nonetheless fascinated by them. This lamp is no exception.

Designed by Lasse Klein, the lamp features the following impressive tech specs, which I have admittedly very lazily just copied and pasted from the lamp’s official site.

  • Energy saving LEDs
  • High Quality Perspex Beam
  • Removable Bovine Abductee
  • Glowing green/yellow cockpit
  • Glow-in-the-dark aliens in cockpit
  • High quality steel body with fantastic black-pearl finish
  • 3-stage UFO Control antenna, on/off and pulse
  • Ultra non-slip base featuring real fake grass

Real fake grass! When I was a boy, we just had the fake fake grass. The times are a-changin’. Speaking of change, this lamp will set you back $100 USD plus whatever it’ll cost to ship to your location.

Because the lamp uses LEDs, it isn’t very bright. It is, however, genius.

HALLOWEEN FUN
Han Solo on Tauntaun

Han Solo on Tauntaun

Halloween is a huge deal at my house. Most families go crazy and over-the-top for Christmas. Christmas is all right and will always remind me of Voltron-getting, but Halloween is way more fun. When else is it totally acceptable to walk around in costume while trying to scare kids?

My wife and I started our Halloween decorating last night and got our Han Solo on Tauntaun doll action figure in on the fun this year with an impromptu skull mask. Yes, Han Solo is dressed up as Uncle Owen for Halloween this year.

Phantasy Star is on the Virtual Console

Last Monday, my favourite game of all time was released on the Wii Virtual Console. That game is Phantasy Star. With those two bits of information, one doesn’t have to be Professor Layton to determine what I’ve been playing all week. But wait! I’ve actually been playing a few more games, too. Both Jorge and I have recently completed playing Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, so expect a review of that in the coming week.

That’s all from me for now. Time to get back to Phantasy Star, which is quite possibly the best 8-bit game ever.

Meeting Professor Hershel Layton – AND LUKE!

Meeting Professor Hershel Layton - AND LUKE!

Imagine my joy when just a few days after meeting Professor Hershel Layton at his summer abode, I should run into him again at FanExpo. Oh wait, this time it was actually some fans cosplaying as the world-renowned archaeologist and his apprentice, Luke. Not only that, but these two clever kids also constructed the robot dog from Professor Layton and the Curious Village.

I ran into these folks on Friday, talked to them a bit, grabbed their photo, and wished them well. Then on Saturday, I saw them again while I was standing in line to get in. Layton and I made eye contact. I smiled, as if to say “Hey, what’s up?”

He looked back as if to say hi, but then I continued looking in a manner which said, “Remember me? From yesterday?”

His expression changed slightly. He didn’t remember. I kept looking at him, but this time I felt dirty about it. Not that I wanted to come across this way, but I’m pretty sure the message I was sending out was now, “Hey there, little fella. What’s your name?”

He broke eye contact and walked away.

FanExpo – Now Entering Recovery Mode

FanExpo - Now Entering Recovery Mode

This weekend has been a blur of nerdy activity for us here at Toronto Thumbs. We spent some of it podcasting, some of it gaming, and a whole lot of it at FanExpo. Wait, scratch that, a whole lot of it in lines at FanExpo. It was still a lot of fun and we got to catch up with some old friends and make some new ones. Plus, we got to meet the cutest wittle stormtwooper in the world.

Doubt – The Video Game

Doubt - The Video Game

The Fatal Farm guys are nothing if not genius. They’re the guys behind the hilarious Lasagna Cat, the almost believable Infinite Solutions, and the absurdly subversive alternate-versions of TV show intros.

They were recently commissioned to do a bunch of vignettes for the MTV Movie Awards. This is one of them – a video showing off the video game version of Doubt, a movie that could not look blander from its trailers. Not surprisingly, the game doesn’t look that much better. But I’m still inclined to believe this to be a case of game > movie. Dig those 16-bit Genesis graphics. Aww, yeah.
