Mad With Power Ring Power
Jim Squires

By Shaun Hatton - January 27th, 2010

Mad With Power Ring Power

Not long ago we held a Blackest Night contest with Sidekick Comics providing the goods: A set of Lantern power rings, one for each colour of the rainbow. Jim Squires won them, and upon receiving them, snapped a photo of himself and did some great work superimposing himself onto the cover of this Green Lantern comic book. Bonus points for the Green Lantern shirt!

Jim, I’m glad you’re enjoying the rings. In other DC Universe news, their next ring promotion will be for the Brightest Day event, and they’ll be giving away Flash and Green Lantern rings. I wrote a bit about it for 4 Color Rebellion yesterday, so check it out. Given the rather close relationship between Toronto Thumbs and Sidekick Comics, I’d say there’s a good chance we might have a giveaway for those rings, too.

CONTEST WINNER
Lantern Power Ring Giveaway

Lantern Power Ring Giveaway

All right! All right! I’m awake. Jeez. Who knew that 54-40 could rock so hard till the wee hours of the morning despite it being well below zero degrees Celsius? I did, of course; as a huge fan of the band (they are, in fact, my fave band ever) it was a real treat to see them usher in 2010 on the 29th anniversary of their first-ever show, even though I might have ended up with some form of frostbite. But enough about that!

We just drew a winner for our Lantern Power Ring Giveaway. Mr. Jim Squires was the lucky random winner. We asked all entrants to state their comic heroes, be they fictional characters or the people behind them, and Jim’s response was quite heartfelt:

In my heart of hearts, my #1 comic book hero right now has to be Toronto’s own Bryan Lee O’Malley. I’m a late-comer to the Scott Pilgrim party, but as a writer he’s an inspiration. A shining example that comics don’t all have to be about men in tights. A close runner up for the same reason would be Gene Luen Yang.

Jim’s also let us know that this win will be the kick in the pants he needs to get back into the DC Universe. We recommend checking in with our sponsors, Sidekick Comics, for any comic book needs you may have (including back issues!). Jim also mentioned he’s going to be wearing these rings in place of his real wedding ring, which is currently inside of a turtle (though not really). Although this is really geeky and cool I hope he finds his real ring soon. Congrats to Jim, thanks to all the entrants for sharing their fond comic love, and Happy New Year to all!

CONTEST
Lantern Power Ring Giveaway

By Shaun Hatton - December 21st, 2009

Lantern Power Ring Giveaway

Over a month ago, we teased about an upcoming contest. It took a while to get to, but now it’s finally here. If you’re a fan of comics, then you might be familiar with DC’s Blackest Night event. As part of the promotion for it, the comics giant offered retailers the opportunity to give away different-coloured lantern power rings with select comics throughout the month of November.

Our friends at Sidekick Comics have given us a full set of these awesome rings to give away to one lucky winner of this contest. The rings are solidly constructed and are sized for adult fingers, unlike previous promotional Green Lantern rings. These rings all feature great metallic finishes and, since they come in every colour of the rainbow, are great for accessorizing.

All you need to do if you want to enter this contest is: A) have a Canadian (UPDATE: Or US) mailing address and B) leave a comment on this post with the name of your favourite comic book hero in it. “Hero” in this context can be a fictional character, an artist, writer, or even creator.

The contest closes January 1, 2010. We’ll draw a winner at random* when we wake up that day. Keep in mind due to festivities, this might not be until rather late in the day. We’ll contact the winner at the email address used to leave the comment for some follow-up information, so be sure to use a real one.

UPDATE: Check out the WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT to see who won!

*If, however, the winning comment we draw has Rob Liefeld listed as a comic hero, we will disqualify that entrant from this and all future contests.

Giveaway:
Win Cities XL

By Toronto Thumbs Staff - December 1st, 2009

Win Cities XL

Jorge reviewed Cities XL back in November and, as a huge fan of SimCity, liked the game quite a bit.

We’ve been given three copies of Cities XL to give away, with one of them being the Limited Edition, and we’re giving these away to three random Canadians who comment here with the name of a song that has “city” in it by December 12, 2009. So have at it, and remember: if you use a fake email address to comment here, we won’t be able to contact you and therefore you can’t win.

Good luck!

DJ HERO CONTEST
The Winners!

By Shaun Hatton - November 15th, 2009

DJ Hero Demo Kit

Our DJ Hero Demo Kit contest has come to a close. There were some great entries (and some not so great ones - see our first winner, below). Sadly we only had three of these to give away, but in my mind all our entrants are winners because they took the initiative to go out of their way to enter our contest - and that’s cool! Congratulations to our three winners!

CONTEST
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Military Pack

By Shaun Hatton - November 9th, 2009

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Military Pack

When we first reported that we’d be giving away Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Military Packs, we had no idea what these might actually be. We knew they had to be related to the game, and we knew they had to be awesome. But today when we received the drop box pictured above, we were pleasantly surprised to find it jam-packed with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising goodness.

Each military pack consists of one messenger bag with a T-shirt, one map of Skira, one postcard, and one of those trendy metallic drinking bottles that everyone’s using – except this one is way better since it’s branded with the awesome Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising logo. If you want to see more photos of the prize pack, we’ve put them up on Flickr for your ogling pleasure.

If you want one of these packs, we’ll be glad to share them with random people who email torontothumbs@gmail.com with the subject “Get Better At Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising” before November 30, 2009 (note this is an updated contest deadline). This contest is open to residents of Canada and the good ol’ US of A.

Lantern Power Ring Giveaway Happening Soon

Following the success of our Black Lantern Power Ring and Blackest Night #1 contest, the good people at Sidekick Comics have once again come through with another killer cross-promotion. This time, we’ll be giving away a complete set of Lantern Power Rings, pictured above. I have seen these rings in person and they’re of solid construction. They even have a nice metallic finish, which you can’t really tell from this cellphone photo that well.

We’re in the process of ironing out some of the details and will kick off the contest once all the prizing has been confirmed. Who knows, we might even have more cool stuff to throw in as prizing.

DJ HERO CONTEST
Kat is a DJ Hero

By Shaun Hatton - November 5th, 2009

Kat is a DJ Hero

This photo is made of win and is full of amazing geek points. Kat’s busy mixing what appears to be a Jesse “The Body” Ventura album from an Ion turntable to her computer. She also gets bonus points for the Gary Numan, David Bowie, The Beatles, and Prince albums (even if she’s pandering directly to me). Check out that Geordie LaForge character mug! I have one just like it, only it’s a Boba Fett mug. I guess that’s really not quite the same thing, is it?

Kat’s entry also reminds me that girls read this site. This makes me a little nervous.

Have you entered the contest yet? Your face could be right here! Better yet, you might actually win!
