Intel Extreme Masters

I was ready to write-off Fan Expo 2014 as “been there, done that” this year, and was subsequently shown by the StarCraft Gods that I was dead wrong. Earlier this July, it was announced that the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Season 9 finals would be held at Fan Expo, and magically I was excited again. With a $25,000 total prize pool and 4,000 WCS points at stake, I knew that the Toronto eSports crowd was going to be out in full force for this event.

eSports Platform Announces Public Beta

Good/interesting news for eSports fans! A full service league and tournament management system is currently in public beta. BattleFy gives organizers a complete solution for managing video game leagues, tournaments, and content. Earlier this year, BattleFy raised $1.3 million in venture capital money, which is a great show of confidence in the goal and vision of BattleFy and their product.

WCS Season 3 Finals

Blizzard and NASL hosted the WCS Season 3 Finals at the Toronto Congress center from Octtober 25-27th, and gave Canadian fans a chance to show off their eSports love once again. Let’s just say that Toronto loves Starcraft. Not just Toronto and the surrounding GTA though – eSports fans from all over Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Vancouver, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and even Florida drove/flew/walked/swam their way to Toronto to show their love for the 16 remaining WCS finalists for season 3. Not surprisingly, 15 of the 16 players were Korean, with Vortix as the lone foreigner qualifying as part of WCS Europe. Foreigner or not, everyone had their work cut out for them at WCS.

NASL 3 Grand Finals

The NASL 3 Grand Finals were held at the International Centre on July 14-15 – any missteps that NASL may have made in the past have been erased from the minds of all that attended. To be fair, with the overly enthusiastic crowd that showed up, it would have been pretty hard for NASL to screw this up. When your biggest problem is not having enough seats, you know you’re doing something right.
