E3 2011 Coverage
Checking In With Sony

By Jorge Figueiredo - June 12th, 2011

e3-sny-1

E3 is a crazy time for gaming and tech journalism. So much goes on that it’s a pain to sift through everything to try and figure out what is most important. Everyone and their grandmother is reporting on something from E3. We decided to employ a different strategy this year. We are going to do a bit of a retrospective on what happened last week so people can digest without being distracted. First up: Sony. We had a chance to chat with Matt Levitan from Sony Playstation Canada about Sony’s E3 press conference…

Playstation Move Heroes

By Jorge Figueiredo - April 5th, 2011

As someone that is only familiar with the six heroes in Playstation Move Heroes from commercials, I was a bit curious as to how I would feel about playing the title. Mike Jackson is nuts about these guys (having enjoyed Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time and, more recently, The Sly Collection, indicating that the rich stories and great characters are some of the reasons why he likes these franchises. As a neophyte to these characters, I had no real expectations going in; but I had a big smile on my face after I played the game.

MLB 11: The Show

By Jorge Figueiredo - March 30th, 2011

mlb11ts-1

Last year, Mike Croft reviewed MLB 10: The Show, declaring it the best Baseball game that he has played on any platform. Shortly after his review, I tried the game for myself (with one of my neighbours); I truly was the best baseball game that I had played in a long time. Now that MLB 11: The Show has landed in my glove, I am going to have to take back the World Series trophy from 2010 and declare a new winner: 2011′s version takes the prize.

Stuff From Lately

News

The cold grip of winter remains through March, allowing us to feel justified in staying in and playing our precious, precious games. One source of warmth seems to be the seemingly endless amount of DLC coming out this month; not too shabby. There are also some other little tidbits that we have discovered. So much to see…

March Break Madness
Off the Wall? Off the Couch!

By Jorge Figueiredo - March 12th, 2011

A lot has been made lately of the interactivity of games; and rightly so. The image of the stereotypical gamer up until recently has been synonymous with ‘couch potato’ (even with Nintendo’s more active innovation years ago). Now, with Sony’s Playstation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect, it is getting harder to refer to us gamers as ‘sacks of potatoes’; especially so, since the introduction of so many new offerings in fitness software.

I had the chance to chat briefly with Sharon Vinderine (founder and CEO of PTPA Inc.*) about motion gaming and its role in family fitness. Sharon spoke about the role of Kinect and urges families to give it a spin, especially in light of the upcoming March Break**.

Move Into the New Year
A Few Things to Note…

By Jorge Figueiredo - December 26th, 2010

Good ol’ KB tells you where you can stick this if you don’t like it.

Sony’s Playstation Move launched a few months ago with a number of Move titles at a decent price point; also, people that I have spoken to (for the most part) really seem to enjoy it. And what’s not to enjoy? With a decent number of casual games available, as well as some titles that are not so casual, the Move appeals to a fairly wide audience. Now that the retail dust of Christmas and Boxing Day has settled, people can mosey out to the stores and remain unmolested while they check out some of these titles…

The Fight: Lights Out

By Jorge Figueiredo - December 4th, 2010

While there is no shortage of realistic fight films, I find that the video game world is lacking in the same genre. Don’t get me wrong; there are lots of interesting fighting games, but they are lacking the gritty realism that you see in flicks like Fight Club. Street Fighter, Tekken, even Wii Sports Boxing; these are not examples of realistic fighting games. The Fight: Lights Out, by Coldwood Interactive, is certainly not a perfect game; but it is ambitious, and an awesome addition to the fighting genre.
