Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

By Jorge Figueiredo - November 29th, 2011

acrr-1

A few years ago, Assassin’s Creed appeared on store shelves. The game told the story of Desmond Miles, who used a machine called the Animus (not entirely of his own volition) to relive part of the life of an ancestor: Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, an assassin. Born into a sacred order of killers bound by the Assassin’s Creed*, Altair aided his “family” in the upholding of choice among people; a right that was being threatened by an opposing order called the Templars, who were interested only in control of the human populace.

Eventually, Desmond managed to escape (Assassin’s Creed 2). He was taken in by another group who had their own version of the Animus. Using their technology, Desmond accessed the life of another ancestor: Ezio Auditore da Firenze. An Italian nobleman, Ezio witnessed the death of his family and became an Assassin first out of revenge; later, he realized that he actually had a higher purpose. His adventure continued in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, where he fought in the war against the Templars as a master Assassin, training others to take up the cause. Brotherhood also included a fantastic multi-player mode.

Now we reach the final chapter in the lives of both Altair and Ezio in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. How does this game fare in a series that has done nothing but gain momentum so far?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: An Afterthought; Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the CoD

By Tim Krynicki - November 25th, 2011

I don’t get first-person shooters. To me, it’s the equivalent of trying to understand the intricacies of a UFC fight night when you don’t know the first thing about mixed martial arts. On nights like those I usually find myself dodging Vin Diesel clones, making a beeline to the server, and participating in a quick-time event to pay for my drink and make a run for the nearest patio. Only then can I sit back and shake my head in absolute amusement. You might think I have gone bonkers comparing UFC fans to the Call of Duty gamers but it’s true! One thing I have noticed (in either camp) is: those that “get it” are rabid fans to the bitter end; these people are willing to put relationships and sleep cycles on the line just to watch Fighter A duke it out with Fighter B and/or level up while improving their kill-to-death ratio. It’s a Jersey thing, I think.

Then something happened. I called a friend out, we met for drinks, and on impulse (and partially drunk) we decided to wait out the last half-hour to Modern Warfare 3’s midnight launch. We both grabbed a copy but unlike the rest of the kids in line, the first thing we did when we got home was pass out – with Infinity Ward’s take on World War 3 in tow.

Rocksmith

Ricky and I both had a fair bit of time with Rocksmith before its official launch. I already shared my view with you. This is his.

I have been playing guitar for about seven years now. I taught myself how to play through the internet and by playing with other people. I don’t know many songs and prefer to write my own, mainly because I can’t be bothered to take the time to learn songs written by other people. That is why when I heard the concept behind Ubisoft’s Rocksmith I was super-excited. I was looking forward to learning how to play real songs on a real instrument through a video game and maybe learn a few tricks along the way. When I finally got my hands on the game I was impressed, though bored for much of the beginning.

Dungeon Defenders

What it’s all about.

I enjoy a good game of tower defense. When that game of tower defense is enhanced by a third-person action element, I like it even more! What happens when you throw in an RPG element and the ability to play online with friends? My brain explodes from sheer joy. Luckily, I have a skull to contain those types of explosions; so when I play games like Trendy Entertainment’s Dungeon Defenders, I don’t have to hire professionals to pick brain matter out of my carpet.

PS Holiday Preview – Silent Hill: Downpour

By Erika Szabo - October 26th, 2011

Since the release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dead Space 2 and the audio-only Deep Sea, we haven’t really seen the release of a legitimately scary game. We have had our share of suspenseful thrillers, but the intense anxiety and helplessness you get from playing horror games is beyond anything else imaginable. Because of this, horror games are probably one of the most unique genres: instilling feelings that become more interactive than usual; feelings that linger for days – perhaps even years. Many gamers will tell you that the Silent Hill series has consistently proven itself to be a charter member of this genre, time and time again. While Silent Hill: Shattered Memories failed in its pursuit to inspire true helplessness, Konami has since realized that the only way to instill that same sense of fear is to go back to the roots. Welcome to Silent Hill: Downpour.

Splinter Cell HD

“Give me back multi-player co-op you bastages!”

I never got into Splinter Cell when it came out back in 2002 due to an unfortunate combination of me being a lowly Gamecube child, and having a fear of new things. If I had a time machine though, I’d go back in time and slap the fourteen-year-old me across the face for not getting into Splinter Cell*. Sadly, I do not have a time machine, so Ubisoft has felt gracious enough to provide the world with an HD collection of the original three Splinter Cell games. Do the old Splinter Cell games hold their own in today’s market? Or should all this time traveling be left to Doctor Who?

PS Holiday Preview – Uncharted 3

By Erika Szabo - October 24th, 2011

If there’s one video game series that remains consistently exciting, charming and offers the same visual spectacle as a Hollywood blockbuster, it’s Uncharted. Since its inception in 2007, the action-adventure/third-person shooter has maintained its place in the vast gaming library as one of the best and brightest, challenging other blockbusters and always coming away with outstanding results. Naughty Dog, the developer of the series, clearly knows just how to astound its audience. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, the next chapter in the series, proves no to be different than its predecessors.

Rocksmith

Have you ever wanted to play the guitar? Or are you more of a garage-band hack that wants to refine your technique? Or maybe you’re a pro that wants more of a challenge than pressing a bunch of coloured buttons and strumming a plastic tab? Regardless of what type of guitarist you are (or soon will be), welcome to the next step in the evolution of instrument-driven music games; welcome to Ubisoft’s Rocksmith.

PS Holiday Preview – Ubisoft

By Jorge Figueiredo - October 15th, 2011

Ubisoft always does a great job on their booths, regardless of the event; their display at the Sony Preview Event was no exception. The familiar sight of a bank of gaming stations dedicated to multi-player Assassin’s Creed: Revelations brought a smile to my face. However, there were a few other games waiting for eager participants, one of them being a surprise to me.

PS Holiday Preview – Street Fighter X Tekken

By Ricky Lima - October 13th, 2011

Ok. Follow me on this one: Street Fighter IV is wicked right? And Capcom’s VS. series is totally insane, correct? And Tekken is a classic in the fighting genre, almost as important as Street Fighter, agreed? So I ask you what happens when you combine all those separate ingredients into a blender and hit the button. Will it blend? Well, you don’t need an irrelevant YouTube channel to find out. I recently went hands on with Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken and I learned that all of these ingredients do indeed blend well together – with explosive results.
