WB

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 8th, 2013

Warner Bros. has always been a big contender for its share of your attention. With a bevy of content in the way of television shows, movies and videogames, chances are you have probably watched or played something made by WB in the last two weeks. Earlier this year, WB Interactive Entertainment released Injustice: Gods Among Us – a helluva way to start the year. However, they are not just resting on their laurels, and their booth at Fan Expo Canada showed exactly what they have been up to.

LEGO!

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 6th, 2013

The LEGO booth was hopping at Fan Expo Canada 2013. When I walked by, people were busy building their own Star Wars spacecraft at a buffet-styled build station (and they got to take their projects home with them!), while others were gawking at some of the LEGO sculptures that had been created. LEGO Iron Man (Mark XLII, I believe) and LEGO Man of Steel were just two of the amazing pieces that were on display.

The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story

By Jarita Lee - September 5th, 2013

If you are a Broadway fan, you may have heard of the name Vivek Tiwary. He is a Tony Award-winning producer and has been involved in shows such as Green Day’s American Idiot, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Addams Family. This November will see Vivek’s first foray into the graphic novel realm with his release of The Fifth Beatle from Dark Horse. The story focuses on the life of Brian Epstein, who Paul McCartney once declared as “the fifth Beatle”. Brian Epstein famously discovered and managed The Beatles from the beginning of their career until his death in 1967, and I jumped at the chance to talk to Vivek about his project during Fan Expo 2013 in Toronto.

Disney Infinity Booth

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 5th, 2013

Disney had a booth with several console stations that gave Expo fans the chance to try out Disney Infinity. Disney Infinity is an open-world game that uses a set of figurines (with data embedded in the base) to create a great game-play experience for Disney fans young and old alike. The basic set comes with three figures (Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow and Sully), as well as the worlds that they come from. Players can choose to engage in campaign mode, or jump into the Toy Box and create their own adventures. It’s Disney’s answer to Skylanders – and they could very well be the dominant force this Christmas.

Jarita’s Saturday Walkabout

By Jarita Lee - September 3rd, 2013

Yeah, that’s a lot of people – and this is just a section of the North building.

Another year, another FanExpo – and this time around the organizers decided to use the entire convention center (finally), expanding to the North and South buildings (finally) of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. While the crowd and space improvements were definitely noticeable, I was actually more amazed at how they ever fit Fan Expo in just the South building in previous years. It really is a testament to the Fan Expo crowd that some sort of massive disaster (ie. fights, arguments, mass exodus etc.) has never broken out in the years prior to 2013, because seriously – how did we all fit in there?

Dames Making Games

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 1st, 2013

As stated before, I loves me some indies! Tucked away in the midst of the giant displays of the triple-A studios was a great booth featuring some of the work done at Bento Miso; particularly the works of Dames Making Games. Dames Making Games is a not-for-profit, educational feminist organization that supports ladies interested in creating games. Now, before you get all up in arms about the word “feminist”, I’ll assure you that this organization is pretty cool; empowering and enabling dames to leverage a supportive community to create their own games in a comfortable atmosphere.

One of the games that was created thanks to this effort was a little gem called Death Is Not the End (by Erica Gregory), which I had the pleasure of trying out.

Interview With Dark Horse

By Ricky Lima - August 30th, 2013

At Fan Expo this year I was excited to speak with Aub Driver (the PR mastermind behind Dark Horse) about all of the amazing video game comics that they have been releasing lately. At the Expo, Dark Horse had a modest set-up with shelves of books and a small table with free swag. Little did I know that all of the charisma and energy was stored inside of one man at the booth: the leather clad bad-ass that is Aub Driver. We spent some time chatting about video games and comics. Some of that conversation is below.
