Nerd Noise Night

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 9th, 2014

For the last few years, one of the most fun aspects of Fan Expo is what happens in the evening: Nerd Noise Night. If you haven’t heard of Nerd Noise Night, you have been missing out on an amazing evening of incredible music, awesome people, and great prizes. Spearheaded by former Toronto Thumbs Editor-in-Cheese Shaun Hatton, this event had been so successful that it has expanded to become a two-night show.

LEGO

Fan Expo is always chock-full of interesting displays; as usual LEGO’s booth was a force to be reckoned with. When it comes to interactivity, LEGO really pulls out all of the stops. Wonderfully crafted LEGO tributes to popular movie and cartoon characters dotted the space while various construction areas were available for people to get their build on.

Cosplay

Every year, droves of people attend Fan Expo, and many of them pay tribute to their favourite fictional (and sometimes non-fictional) characters in the form of cosplay. Even on a Thursday, cosplayers were out in full force, showing off their amazing disguises. I love having a camera for this event, because I get to capture some truly magnificent work. Some of the costumes in the gallery above are actually part of official displays – but they are no less worthy of admiration. Click the pic above to check out some of the costumes!

Hasbro

Hasbro had a small booth this year, showing some of the toy lines that compose their front line. Both Kreo and My Little Pony made an appearance, with each getting one side of the floor space. As usual, several folks from Hasbro were on hand to show off some of the cool Fan Expo exclusives and help people with any questions. Toronto Thumbs will be reviewing a number of Hasbro goodies in the next few months; but in the mean time, check out some of the cool stuff that we saw on the Fan Expo show floor.

Blind Ferret Entertainment

What sounds like some kind of odd cartoon animal character running an entertainment company is actually a few odd characters who draw cartoons. Ryan Sohmer and Lar DeSouza have made an appearance at Fan Expo for as long as I can remember covering it. They have a number of different web comics, some of which have the distinction of making it to print. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes irreverent, their works use humour to address poignant social issues. Of course, at other times, they just draw funny comics.

Intel Extreme Masters

I was ready to write-off Fan Expo 2014 as “been there, done that” this year, and was subsequently shown by the StarCraft Gods that I was dead wrong. Earlier this July, it was announced that the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Season 9 finals would be held at Fan Expo, and magically I was excited again. With a $25,000 total prize pool and 4,000 WCS points at stake, I knew that the Toronto eSports crowd was going to be out in full force for this event.

Ubisoft

By Jorge Figueiredo - September 3rd, 2014

At Fan Expo, Ubisoft likes to make an impact. This time, they hit their fans before they even entered the main hall with a graffiti-art mural just outside of the main room in the South Building. I didn’t get to see it fully completed, but what I saw was really impressive. The Ubisoft booth is always one of the most visible among the large number of displays. It was not difficult to see it from far away (seriously, it could be seen from the entrance). When I arrived at the large booth, I stopped to marvel at the life-sized guillotine (complete with French soldier standing guard). Further in, people were playing Far Cry 4, and checking out the latest Rabbids commercial, playing on a television mounted on a retail wall (full of Ubisoft goodies). As usual, Ubisoft had it goin’ on.
